DPF CLEANING

WHAT IS A DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER?

A diesel particulate filter (DPF), or simply particulate filter, is a device for reducing the particulate matter present in the exhaust gases of diesel engines. The particulate filter consists of a porous ceramic (silicon carbide) and has a honeycomb structure with a large number of channels that are alternately closed at their ends so that the exhaust flow is forced to pass through the fine pores of the filter walls. The gaseous substances pass through easily, while the substantially larger soot particles and other solids are retained on the intermediate walls and are deposited on the surfaces of these walls. Naturally, the pores of the filter become more and more blocked as the mileage increases. As the soot content rises, so too does the flow resistance in the filter and the exhaust gas pressure before the filter increases. The permissible soot content of the filter is limited. The DPF system is fitted with a measuring device to record the exhaust gas back pressure. The exhaust pressure is measured before and after the filter. This pressure differential is used to determine the soot and ash content of the filter. The DPF system is permanently monitored by the engine management system. At regular intervals and depending on various parameters such as the pressure difference, distance driven, time and temperature, the engine management system initiates an automatic cleaning process.

SELF-REGENERATION

After a distance covered of between 300 and 1,000 km, the engine management system automatically triggers the filter regeneration. Depending on the manufacturer, the exhaust gas temperature is raised temporarily during this process by injecting either additional fuel or additive to a level that burns the accumulated soot to ash, and the exhaust gas back pressure then falls again. Under normal operating conditions and with a perfectly functioning engine, the driver generally does not notice the effort being exerted for the additional treatment of the exhaust gases.

ERROR MESSAGES

If the ash/soot content limit has been exceeded and active regeneration is not possible, a warning light or a text message on the instrument panel will indicate a blockage of the filter. This prompts the engine management system to enter emergency mode and reduce the engine output in order to avoid consequential damage and lower exhaust gas emissions. Various reasons may prevent this regeneration process from taking place, and as a consequence the DPF becomes blocked with soot particles.

POSSIBLE CAUSES OF ERROR MESSAGES

  • Driving profile with short trips
  • Defective or not fully functional injectors
  • EGR valve coated in soot or coked up
  • Different fuel qualities due to varying biofuel components
